Understanding the 21st Century Cures Act

To put it simply, the 21st Century Cures Act is massive.  Signed into law by former President Obama in 2016, this 312-page bipartisan act seeks to accelerate medical advancements and development, tackle the opioid crisis, and empower the citizens of the United States via providing greater access to their healthcare data.  With over $500 million and a nine-year time span, the FDA will implement this law and create positive change for U.S. healthcare consumers.

It’s important to recognize that this law has been a point of agreement throughout the three most recent presidential administrations, demonstrating the importance of transparency, efficiency and innovation in healthcare.  However, while the Cures Act is extensive, there is relatively little information available regarding policy implementation and how it will impact U.S. citizens.

Over the next few months, Abett will publish blog posts unpacking the various aspects of the Cures Act and what the changes mean for consumers.  From the Price Transparency Act to Interoperability, much has been happening within healthcare policy that will have big impacts on citizens, companies, and healthcare processes.  So, stay tuned for the latest information on the Cures Act to better prepare for changes to come.
