The person in this role will design and implement secure and scalable product features for the Abett software platform. Our platform is built on AWS, with a serverless architecture, and must conform to tight security requirements governed by legislation such as HIPAA.
Our software engineers are highly productive, self-motivated, and collaborative. They value code reviews and design discussions. They understand how to work to solve the most important customer problems while also maintaining flexibility for future product evolution. By making the best possible design decisions up front, they create an absolute minimum of technical debt.
Abett is based in Seattle, Washington, but we are a fully distributed (remote) organization. This position reports to the CTO, and compensation includes equity options.
Context and vision
In the United States, employers are an important consumer of healthcare. Employers set terms in benefits plans that dictate what healthcare is available, and how much it costs.
However, for decades, employers have been passive consumers of healthcare. The healthcare industry has become inefficient, and the costs of healthcare have exploded.
Abett helps employers become fierce consumers of HR benefits and healthcare. This is a substantial commercial opportunity, and we believe Abett’s product will eventually serve to improve how the US economy functions.
We use technology to shift market power from entrenched vendors to the employers and patients who ultimately pay the bills.
We accomplish this mission by delivering a SaaS data-management product for employers. It provides four benefits: (1) a centralized “data store” for HR and healthcare data; (2) automated and secure data transfers between vendors; (3) “swappable” APIs, to replace vendors as needed; and (4) compliance with complex laws and regulations. These benefits help employers start the journey to becoming fierce consumers of HR benefits and healthcare.
Abett is an early-stage company. Still, we have closed deals with over a half-dozen Fortune 500 employers, among others. We recently closed an institutional (venture capital) financing round. That validation and financing enables us to grow our team.
Our problem, or why we are hiring
Our product roadmap is densely packed with features we need to build to satisfy our customers and obtain new ones. We need capable engineers who can take rough sketches of product functionality, put those ideas into context, follow best practices for architecture and implementation, and execute efficiently on aggressive timelines.
We are actively seeking multiple software engineers to join our team and make an outsized impact on the future of HR benefits and healthcare.
An ideal candidate and next steps
We expect an ideal candidate will:
Have significant hands-on experience building software for cloud-centric applications and services.
Have a deep familiarity with and appreciation of AWS services such as S3, DynamoDB, CloudFront, Lambda, IAM, and others.
Be a full-stack engineer, who cares about how the core services work as well as how the functionality lands for the end user.
Have passion for learning, and a demonstrated ability to learn, adapt, and execute. Desire, expect, and demand responsibility and accountability.
Understand the benefits and costs of working in a start-up venture.
Many companies post job descriptions that require a particular level of education or skill set. Do you have a master’s degree? Six or more years of Node.js experience? Are you a Bootstrap Vue power user? We'd love to know those things...
But what we care about most: can you help solve our problems?
If you believe you’re the right person for that job, then we’d love to hear from you about how you’ll do it.
